Last November, during a family visit to Our Lady of Joy Parish in Carefree, Arizona, Aden Huey '24 experienced a profound and unexpected moment of faith and connection.
During Mass, visiting priest Fr. Jim Sichko shared that Pope Francis had entrusted him with 50 blessed crosses to distribute as he felt called. As he spoke, Fr. Jim said God was telling him to give a young man in attendance one of the crosses. He then walked towards Aden, who extended his hand to receive the special gift.
After Mass, Aden’s family spoke with Fr. Jim, thanking him for his kindness. During their conversation, Aden’s mother shared that one of the Options Program projects was writing letters to Pope Francis. Fr. Jim, who was scheduled for an audience with the Pope in mid-January, gladly offered to personally deliver a letter from Aden.
Excited by the opportunity, Aden carefully crafted a handmade Christmas card, decorating it with a Christmas tree, Advent wreath and festive winter designs. Inside, he wrote a heartfelt thank you note to Pope Francis, expressing his gratitude for the blessed cross.
Just this week, a family friend from Our Lady of Joy parish sent remarkable photos at the Vatican showing Fr. Jim handing Aden’s letter to Pope Francis!
This incredible chain of events reminds us of the power of faith, kindness and connection worldwide. Congratulations, Aden, on this once-in-a-lifetime experience!
