All high school athletes must have a current physical on file prior to participation in athletics. Physicals are valid for two years.
TRYOUTS BEGIN NOVEMBER 18, 2024
Tryouts - Monday - Wednesday, 3 - 5 p.m. in the EC gym. Practice - Thursday and Friday, 3 – 4:45 p.m. (varsity until 5:30)
Practices - Monday - Friday, 3 – 4:45 p.m. (varsity until 5:30) except on game days. Subject to change over the holidays. There will be practices over Thanksgiving and Christmas break.
Coach Brent Merritt has been the boys basketball head coach since 2015. Before coming to EC, he was an assistant coach at Garfield High School. Coach Merritt attended high school in Oakland, CA, where he achieved high basketball and track and field honors. He earned a scholarship to the University of Washington, where he played basketball and ran track. In his senior year at UW, Coach Merritt averaged 12.6 points per game and 2.5 steals under Coach Lynn Nance. In 1990, he earned All-American track and field honors; in 1991, at the Pac-10 Championships, he won first place in the men’s 4x400 and second place in the 400m. After college, Coach Merritt played basketball in the Brazilian Professional League from 1993-2001, consistently averaging 20 points per game. Coach Merritt is also an Assistant Athletic Director at Eastside Catholic and resides in Seattle.
Troy Chambers
Varsity Assistant Coach
Coach Troy Chambers has been the assistant boys basketball coach since 2022. With over 30 years of coaching experience, Coach Chambers has worked with players of all ages, from kindergarten to the collegiate level to Division II basketball. He has coached in various settings, including AAU programs, school basketball teams and basketball camps along the West Coast. With Coach Chambers’ wealth of experience, unwavering dedication and commitment to both the game and his players, he continues to positively impact the lives of young athletes and foster a love for basketball in his community. Outside of coaching, Coach Chambers is also a successful mortgage broker.
Mike Johnson
Assistant Coach
Coach Mike Johnson joined the EC staff in 2023 as an assistant coach for our varsity team. Coach Mike played his high school years for Mount Rainier High School where his team won their first state playoff game in school history. Following high school, he continued his basketball career at North Seattle Community College and then walked on at Western Washington University. He has been training and coaching basketball players and teams since 2006, primarily at his family-owned gym, South Sound Athletics. After graduating college, he began training with local AAU teams and today he coaches his own AAU program, Uptown Select. We are excited to have Coach Mike in our Crusader Basketball family!
Martina Mason
JV-C Head Coach
Coach Martina Mason joined the boys basketball coaching staff in 2022. Coach Mason began playing basketball at age five and played through college. She coached AAU for a few years out of college and is excited to be coaching at Eastside. Coach Brent Merritt was one of Coach Mason's first basketball coaches.
