Senior Named Winner of 2021 Washington State Congressional Art Competition

Senior Bryn Hotes was announced at the winner of the 2021 Congressional Art Competition for Washington’s 1st District by Congresswoman Suzan DeleBene (WA-01). Her mixed media piece, “Goldfish and Mental Health,” will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year.

“The winning artwork is representative of the tremendous creativity we saw this year,” said DelBene. “Bryn demonstrated her skills in mixed media with strength of voice and thoughtful use of symbolism and material. Congratulations to Bryn and all the talented young artists who participated in the competition!”

Since 1982, the Congressional Art Competition has been an opportunity for members of Congress to celebrate the talents of student artists from across the country. Over 650,000 high school students have participated nationwide.

“We’re so proud of Bryn and excited for her to receive this incredible recognition,” said High School Principal Ryan Aiello. “She is an exceptionally talented artist, and we can’t wait to see her flourish in the coming years at Western Washington University.”

Students throughout Washington could enter the contest as long as they live within the district. Each representative of Washington held their own contest. “Goldfish and Mental Health” was selected by a panel of members from the local WA-01 art community. A photo of the artwork can be found here.
