EC Student Earns Recognition in VFW Voice of Democracy Competition

Eastside Catholic ninth-grade student Tarek Zaki earned second place at the Post level in the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Voice of Democracy competition, a national scholarship program that invites high school students to reflect on democratic ideals through writing and recorded essays.

Tarek’s essay explored patriotism through the lens of perseverance, weaving together personal experiences related to health, healthcare leadership and his involvement in the Sea Cadet program. His compelling narrative and confident voice helped his work stand out, showcasing both creativity and thoughtful reflection.

The VFW Voice of Democracy program encourages students to engage with civic values while strengthening their communication and critical-thinking skills. Tarek’s recognition highlights his strong writing ability, insight and willingness to share his perspective.
