Club Spotlight: Women In STEM
Inspiring girls to make an impact in the world
By Angelina Arasavelli, Audrey Bertsch and Gabby Braza
We’ve been students at EC since sixth grade and are the founders and leaders of the Women in STEM club. We founded this club because we were all interested in learning more about science, technology, engineering and math, and the women making big strides in the world, especially those who are marginalized in our society.
The Women in STEM club introduces opportunities available in tech fields and is a place where girls can join together and learn about whatever aspect of STEM interests them or learn more about whomever they see as role models.
Historically there have been fewer opportunities for girls in STEM. We know that is changing, and this club seeks to bring awareness to awesome women in science, technology, engineering and math and inspire anyone who wants to join!
We believe this club brings a sense of community to girls interested in tech fields and resources for those who don’t know where to start.
We make sure to explore topics that club members enjoy and want to learn more about. We enjoyed seeing everyone at the first meeting of the school year and it was truly special to see how dedicated everyone was and the ideas they brought, even on the first day. Ideas included highlighting different women on our daily school announcements, conducting compelling chemistry experiments and much more.
New member Leila V. said, “I decided to join the Women in STEM club because I want to pursue a profession in science and thought, there is no better way to learn about these opportunities than through a club about STEM!”
The Women in STEM club is about inspiring girls to make big changes in the world, and the club members are inspiring to us, too. We believe this club brings a sense of community to girls interested in tech fields and offers a resource for those who don’t know where to start. We are open to everyone and their ideas and interests, and this year, we hope to inspire both the members of the club and the school community to reach further and do more!
