By EC Middle School Counselor Sidney Richardson

As the middle school counselor at EC, I often witness the transformative power of gratitude in our students' lives. Acknowledging the positive aspects of our lives can shift our entire outlook.

For students, this practice of gratitude can be especially powerful amidst challenges. When I check in with students, I often start by asking them what is going well in their lives. This sets the stage for our conversation.

In the school setting, where pressures can sometimes feel overwhelming, teaching students to recognize the things they are thankful for can foster resilience and a sense of well-being. Gratitude helps students cultivate a positive mindset, which in turn nurtures self-esteem and emotional health. It encourages them to reflect on their strengths, achievements and the kindness they receive, creating a ripple effect that often spreads to their relationships with peers and teachers.

As a counselor, I see how this shift in focus can reduce feelings of anxiety, improve mood and even improve academic performance as students begin to feel more connected and empowered. What’s most joyful, though, is seeing the ripple effect of gratitude extend beyond the individual.

When a student expresses thanks, it uplifts them and often inspires others to reflect on their blessings.

Encouraging students to practice gratitude regularly, whether through journaling, sharing with a trusted friend or small acts of appreciation, can help them build a foundation for emotional well-being.
