How To Be an "Upstander"

How are middle school students able to be an "upstander" in our community?

By EC Marketing and Communications Staff

At the beginning of the school year, Humanities Teacher Gina Marrow and Middle School Assistant Principal Erin Vickers presented to middle school students about Eastside Catholic's relationships Touchstone: taking care of each other. The core philosophy of the presentation boiled down to: be an "upstander," or someone who will stand up for others even when it's uncomfortable or inconvenient.

Students learned why this is important and four strategies for how to stand up for others. At the end of the presentation, a challenge was raised for students to create informational posters about ways they can be an "upstander" at EC and in the community.

In total, students crafted 37 posters, and 10 were selected to be voted on by EC faculty. Ultimately, three winners were chosen based on their messaging, creativity and overall presentation. Winners received free-dress passes and their posters are hung permanently in the middle school hallways to educate the EC community about being an "upstander."
