Discovering Law Enforcement Through the Kirkland Cadets

by Eastside Catholic Student Ethan Keegan '26 | Edited by the Eastside Catholic School Marketing and Communications Staff

Ever wonder what it’s like to step into the shoes of a police officer? For Eastside Catholic student Ethan Keegan ’26, that curiosity turned into a hands-on experience through the Kirkland Police Cadets program.

What are the Kirkland Police Cadets?
The Kirkland Cadets is a youth program run by the Kirkland Police Department that is open to teens, ages 14-20, interested in law enforcement or related professions. Through the program, cadets are led by Kirkland Police officers and are given the opportunity to learn from various law enforcement divisions, including Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT), The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and other specialized units. Cadets participate in and learn from simulated scenes including conducting traffic stops, investigations, arrests, interviews, interrogations, radio conduct and more.

The Kirkland Cadets have absolutely influenced my future career goals.

A Spark of Inspiration
As a kid, I would watch police bodycams and talk to family friends who worked in law enforcement. On my most recent trip to Montana in the summer of 2024, I had the opportunity ride along with the undersheriff in the city of Plentywood. This inspiring experience led me to discovering the Kirkland Cadets, where I met the kind and welcoming police officers who advised the cadet program. Through this program, I’ve made connections with officers, made lasting memories through my learning and interacted with peers interested in the same career field.

Bootcamp at Yakima: A Defining Moment
One of the most impactful and memorable experiences I’ve had as a cadet was the opportunity to attend a five-day simulated law enforcement bootcamp at the Yakima U.S. Army Training Center. Feeling anxious about getting prepared for the academy, as soon as I arrived, that feeling quickly faded. I connected with my platoon and made long-lasting connections. This experience not only taught me integrity, how to work hard and the benefit of serving others, but also how to work in a cohesive team and be responsible for each other.

Understanding Law Enforcement and Civic Duty
Through this program, I gained a deeper understanding of law enforcement and civic responsibility and what it means to serve. Law enforcement isn’t just about enforcing laws; it’s about helping people in times of need and working as a team. The Kirkland Cadets influenced my perspective of civic responsibility through the application of key characteristics, like being selfless and having a strong moral compass. Law enforcement specifically is about putting others before yourself and serving your community. Having a strong moral compass can be applied regardless of your profession. A strong sense of integrity means not only holding yourself accountable, but holding your colleagues, friends and others accountable, to allow for growth and development, as well as developing stronger and more honest connections.

Skills That Go Beyond the Badge
From my experiences with the Kirkland Cadets and through the public outreach events, mock-scenarios and the Washington Explorers Academy, I have gained a multitude of skills including integrity, service, teamwork, public speaking and perseverance. Events like the Kirkland City Hall for All, gave me a chance to interact with the public, and apply my public speaking skills helping me to easily interact with people of all ages.

Looking Ahead: Career and College Goals
The Kirkland Cadets have absolutely influenced my future career goals. I originally desired to go into a federal based law enforcement agency, however, the advisors of the Kirkland Cadets inspired me to become a Kirkland Police Officer after college. My desire to serve my community has grown, and becoming a police officer is a way I am able to that.

Through this program, I’ve made connections with officers, made lasting memories through my learning and interacted with peers interested in the same career field.

Advice for Other Students Interested in Public Service
For other students interested in public service, my advice is simple: get involved. Whether it’s through programs like the cadets or other community activities, hands-on experience is the best way to learn about a career and discover your passion

A Voice on the Airwaves
Earlier this summer, Ethan was invited to speak on the City of Kirkland’s Government Podcast about the Cadets Program, fundraisers like the Cadet Car Show and upcoming Cadet events and activities. It was an exciting experience, and I will forever be grateful for it! This podcast experience allowed me to learn how to be my true self and interact with others while applying my public speaking skills.
