Learn more about the history of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Month, and how EC will celebrate during the month of May.

By Director of Equity and Social Action Jenny Abbey

Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month is observed annually in May in the United States to celebrate the contributions, cultures and histories of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. It originated as a week-long celebration in 1978 and was expanded to a month-long observance in 1990.

Why May?
May 7 is the anniversary of the first Japanese immigrants arriving in the United States in 1843, and on May 10, 1869, the transcontinental railroad was completed, aided by the work of many Chinese immigrant laborers. The month of May honors both of these historic dates.

As part of AAPI Month, the EC Asian Heritage and Pacific Islander Affinity Groups organized an assembly for the student body on May 1, which included performances, students showcasing attire from their represented cultures and AAPI-themed treats.

There are many ways to celebrate AAPI Month!

While celebrating the accomplishments and contributions of Asians and Pacific Islanders is encouraged year-round, the month of May offers time to shine a light on the AAPI community. For example, did you know Kristi Yamaguchi, the first Asian American to win a gold medal in figure skating, is getting her own Barbie?
